Acidantheras also known as G. Murieale, the Ethiopian Gladioli or the ‘peacock orchid’, has so many attractive and exotic features.
It flowers when other summer perennials are going over making it a truly valuable addition to take your borders to the end of the season. A heavily rated cut flower to upgrade your bouquets for its unique aesthetics. Sword/ blade foliage with elegant stems bear white hooded flowers with white petals and aubergine splashes towards it’s centre.
Insanely perfumed and night scented, making it beneficial for butterflies and night flying moths. For us humans we recommend growing in a large container positioned near a door or where you sit in the evening’s to make the most of the delicious scent cast from graceful, effervescent, nodding flowers.
Growing information, plant care and aftercare
This bulb should be grown in full sun. These heat loving plants do not tolerate freezing conditions so wait until the soil is warm before planting out into the garden.
Around the time you would place your tomato plants outside. You can start them earlier in pots for earlier flowering.
Plant a single dozen corms per 12” pot, We recommend planting them without other plants or competition. To extend the bloom time, consider planting a handful of corms every 2 weeks, starting at the end of April and continuing into early June.
As an African bulb they need full afternoon in a sheltered position with plenty of water and a weekly feed when in active growth .
Grow as an annual or dig up the bulbs in autumn and store them indoors for winter.
