Crocus sativus (Saffron Crocus)
Crocus sativus (Saffron Crocus)
In Centrall Asia kitchen gardens have long held a space for Crocus sativus, or saffron crocus as it is commonly known. Revered as one of the most precious spices as it takes 200 blossoms and 600 stigmas to cultivate just 1 gram of spice, each thread being meticulously hand picked.
As well as adding it’s strong sweet smell and flavour to many dishes, saffron is known to have medicinal and nutrritional properties. It contains sodium and potassium, is rich in minerals zinc, iron, selenium, copper, calcium and is a great source of vitamins A, B and C.
Our edible flowering saffron bulbs provide wonderful autumn colour and can be planted now up until mid November. These superior grade bulbs produce 2-3 flowers per corm. Sprinkle on winter salads and infuse warming rice dishes for a colourful culinary feast.
